This particular post includes few of the people who shared their view and have built up pretty good reviews about some of the best and the worst books they have read till date. Give it a read and maybe it will convince you enough to give it a thought about it.
1. Fifty Shades of Everything Wrong..
(Raveena Lokur)
So before I start my rant on a book that got me sick to my gut, I have a question for you- Which series has sold over 40 million copies worldwide and overtaken Harry Potter as well as The Da Vinci Code to become the fastest selling paperback in countries? Fifty Shades of Grey, of course! I only read the first book of the trilogy and after completing the book, I wanted to sit in the shower and hug my knees. It was either that or enrolling into a nunnery! The book is allegedly erotic fiction- which is a euphemism for porn on paper. It’s a printed version of pay-per view.
For starters the characters are totally un-relatable (that could be because I don’t know if anyone who indulges in BDSM) to. Christian Grey is portrayed as a modern-day batman and Anastasia Steele is a whinny, insecure creature of God, who is only interested in Christian on a supercilious level. When the protagonists themselves are so far from reality, there is only so much of the storyline that can evolve. My 6 year old cousin can write a better erotica than this. Probably the only reason this book has topped the bestselling list is because there are just so many people out there who…how do I put this delicately…can’t keep it in their pants…??
2. Fall in love with Puzo’s Godfather yet?
(Ritwik Mukherjee)
"Behind every fortune is a crime." These are the words written in the beginning of the book, The Godfather- written by Mario Puzo, highlighting the life of Don Vito Corleone, an Italian mafia head of the Corleone family. This book depicts the rise of Don Corleone from rags to riches, and his son,Micheal Corleone who slowly ascends his father's place in the Italian Mafia arena. Set in the back drop of 1945-55, it depicts the lifestyle of America and Italy, combined in a unique artistic view of Puzo. "I'll make him an offer, he can't refuse."- One of the most famous lines in American cinema. This book has a beautiful touch to literature and the author has depicted the culture of both communities in a way which one can never imagine. The book is a true story about the Italian mafia which brought terms like, "capo", "consigliore" and others in the limelight. It’s a book complete with action, treachery, foul play and mystery throughout. It is known as the rise of a fallen don according to many. This book is considered a classic and according to famous critics, "best in words by Mario Puzo". I have read this book many a times and I urge readers to have a glance at The Godfather. It’s a book worth reading, at least once. And I am pretty sure when you are done with it, you would have a satisfaction of having introduced to such a character.
3. Revolution 2020- what?
(Kshitiz Thapa)
Revolution 2020 - Worst book I have ever read. Chetan Bhagat had done a wonderful job with five point someone, One night at the call center, 2 states and 3 mistakes of my life, but Revolution 2020 was just plain horrible. It was like reading the script of a sad 90s movie (and honestly do we really want to go back to that time in Bollywood history). The book talks about how one fraction of the youth is all idealistic, while the other is trying to make ends meet (while a girl gets attention from both parties). The girl has to be always there, I have no idea why though. The concept is noble but I felt it was just a bit too over the top. Go ahead if you have nothing to do, but reading an NCERT English book would be more enlightening (this also I am saying because I see no point in the literature they taught us back at school, it was simply crap). In the end I just wanted to tell Chetan Bhagat- 'Cool story, bro.'
4. Fall in love with Adams’ guide
(Parth Bhatt)
If you were to ask me what my favorite book of all time was, I'd tell you it’s like asking you to pick one song as your favorite song. It doesn't really work that way, but I will tell you about one of my favorites, called 'A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' by that freak of a genius Douglas Adams. Some of you might have seen the movie based off the book, but as the saying goes, never judge a book by its movie. The hitchhikers guide cannot be done justice by any production that can be perceived by your eyes alone, Adams invokes all your senses when describing the universe his book is set in, often introducing abstract concepts that require you to imagine you have a 6th or 7th sense to perceive what’s going on. You will be hard pressed to find a dull moment during your journey through the galaxy, with hilarity ensuing even in the most dire and/or epic situations. The story starts with the destruction of earth, for construction purposes, which draws ironical analogy with the destruction of our protagonist, Arthur’s home. His escape from the planet with alien friend and companion extraordinaire Ford prefect (named so to blend in with the most apparently dominant life form on earth, the automobile) catapults them into an infinitely improbable journey across the universe. There is no coincidence too great to occur. In-fact, the more improbable an event, the more likely it is to occur (you need to read the book to fully grasp the implications of that sentence) The only possible downside to this book is that it will twist your brain out of shape, and you might get headaches trying to understand the voluptuous barrage of information assaulting your mind. I’ve read the book once with patience and diligence but I’m certain a second read would reveal more than I’d thought possible, and I’d advise all you sci-fi fanatics to give it a whirl. Adams doesn't disappoint.
So I hope you get a good read from this and next time, pick up the right book. Keep reading and do let us know what you have to say about them.
