Politics is a dirty game, no one is righteous or virtues, we all are well aware of that. However, that doesn’t mean that we don’t cast our (I am an Indian from Delhi) votes , the Delhiites will just have to pick their poison. So lets put these three candidates in a retrospect and briefly analyze the possible effect their presence would have on Delhi. We have created our own election poll at the end of this article, do cast your vote!
Dr. Harsh Vardhan
Title: Ex Health Minister: 1993 – 1998
Known For: Starting campaign against polio (1993-1998), ENT Specialist, Won Honors in Public Services.
Unlike some of the ministers in India who portray themselves as un-educated bunch of goons, Dr. Harsh Vardhan seems like a delightful change. Redundant to say that his work experience speaks volumes, but having a Chief Minister who not just has a taste of working in Ministry but is also equally qualified for this position is what the capital of India really needs. Vardhan has been strongly backed by BJP’s Prime Minister Candidate, Narendra Modi and an overwhelming support from RSS party.
In all reality, Vardhan has been represented as the ‘Cleanest Face’ among all the other eligible BJP leaders. Now the question which is oscillating in India’s mind is whether Vardhan is going to turn out to be just a puppet, considering his quite personality or will he actually strive towards bringing change in Delhi? God knows, Delhi definitely needs a change, especially after all the rape cases and having a quite leader is definitely not going to help the image. Even Kejriwal referred Vardhan as “Manmohan Singh of the BJP", definitely not a compliment. So should you vote for Vardhan? He might turn out to be a passive leader and Delhi needs someone who is capable of stemming Delhi’s cons.
Sheila Dikshit
Title: Current Chief Minister of Delhi since 1998
Known For: Delhi CM and Chairperson of Young Women’s Association; UN
Sheila Dikshit has been the Chief Minister of Delhi since 1998. Delhi has evidently been under her control for a long time. Delhi has seen it’s ups and downs during her ‘regime’. I am not going to say much about her, Delhiites and the rest of India has witnessed her successes and failures. Should she be the CM of Delhi again? I say we give change a chance. Delhi’s government hasn’t really handled bad situations very well and maybe a different perspective is required. There was once a time when she got jailed in the 1990’s for 23 days by the state government for leading a movement against atrocities committed on women. Sheila Dikshit was the one who sparked the un-fueled populace in UP to join her movement, what happened to her now? What happened to her fighting spirit, because we sure as hell didn’t see her taking a strong stand on the Nirbhaya Incident of December 2012. Many have lost their faith in Congress, but Congress has always managed to have a tight grip on their Muslim supporters and even this time, they are hoping for Muslim majority to get them outta this mess. Should she be re-elected? Meh.
Aravind Kejriwal
Known For: Indian Social Activist, Former Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Department, Involved in Jan Lokpal Bill
One personality besides Narendra Modi who has been mentioned a lot on social media is Arvind Kejriwal. He has definitely been one of the most vibrant political figures of this year who has not only astounded many in India by running for CM of Delhi, but also by making the Aam Aadmi Party such a success in less than a month. Who would have thought that a fresh new political party like AAP will rival against big time contenders such as Congress and BJP. Many people still don’t understand AAP, they summarize AAP as party for the ‘Common Men’, but there is more to that. AAP believes in the ‘Swaraj’ model of a Government which focusses on; self-governance, community building and decentralization.
Kejriwal is a IIT graduate with a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering degree, yeh he is educated alright. He was the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Department, thus if he doesn’t get rid of corruption in Delhi, then I don’t know who else will. Kejriwal though seems to be really influential, is it possible for him to defeat someone like Sheila Dikshit who has been in Indian Politics for so long. Word is that Anna Hazare’s disapproval of Kejriwal running for CM might be giving AAP’s campaign a hard time, but Kejriwal feels confident that he will defeat Sheila Dikshit on her own ground, New Delhi.
So who would you vote for?
Do you want things to continue as they are…. ? Then your best bet could be Sheila Dikshit.
Do you want to see BJP enforce some new rules in Delhi … ? Vote for Dr. Harsh Vardhan
Do you want to see a new central government all together (possibly) ..? Arvind Kejriwal is your man.
Vote for whoever you think is the best option, remember that not exercising your voting rights is a form of abuse! Help bring change if you are tired of your Government. These may just be elections for Delhi Government, but the capital has always had influence. Delhi needs to reform its image, and who better to take charge of this other than a new Chief Minister, or an old one.
