Hearing is an ability, comprehending is wisdom and listening is a skill. Did we all listen to our teachers when they spent hours teaching and explaining their subjects? Well, most of us didn't, we just heard them. Had we listened carefully, life would have been a tad bit better from an academic point of view, then and in the later stages.
But this is not as much of a concern in today’s society. Those days are left behind when an individual was judged majorly by his/her academics performance, and the trend of soft skills is taking its place instead. Soft skills are the personality traits of an individual which leave a good impression on the other person, and hence also provide great job prospects. They can be attitude, body language, fluency in speaking, and many more, the most important being the skill to listen.

Listening is a two-way process where one speaks and the other comprehends patiently, before
presenting his/her own personal feedback, opinion, suggestion or action. This not only signifies maturity in work but also improves teamwork and the ability to tackle issues. Therefore this is a huge criterion that the recruiters look for in an employee, to aid to the smooth flow of the work at hand. One of the major reasons why Group Discussions are carried out during recruitment is to examine this notable trait of an individual along with spontaneity, knowledge and creativity. All of these qualities, and more, are what constitute a good leader.

Leaders in various spheres, be it the Corporate world or Politics, are the ones who are looked up to by the people under them and who set a benchmark for the future leaders to carry on the advancement, progress. But the question is, why are they made to lead, and what gives them the upper hand in formulating policies or making decisions. The fact that the leaders can connect with people after patiently listening to their needs and limitations, understand the problems they face, and go out of their way to help them, not only fetches the leaders the respect but it also lays the foundation of trust and loyalty. So leadership is not considered in the negative aspect as a dictation of orders, but as a faith in their leader, as a boon, of the two-way process, “listening”.
Job aspirants must be aware and work towards enhancing this skill, and the soft skills overall because with the ever-increasing supply of graduates in our county, the recruiters look for
leadership and teamwork qualities in their employees, along with the technical skillset and
knowledge as pre-requisites. Greatest of the leaders are the most patient of listeners. So if you aspire to emerge as a successful business tycoon, or a political leader or a leader in any of the innumerable fields, begin with keeping your ego and arrogance aside, pay attention to what others have to say, respond, work towards developing patience, but most importantly stop- to hear and begin-to listen.
and when you are done listening, how about some forgiveness?
