People don’t hustle anymore, they thrift these days. Yes, Macklemore has brought back thrift shopping into fashion. This article isn’t about thriftin, its about the new Elvis. The journey from an amateur drunk Professor Macklemore to an independent un-signed rapper; Macklemore, has seen its ups and downs. The changing of names in order to prove his talent is just the surface of what Macklemore has gone through. If you want to dig up about his past, might as well just check Wikipedia, I will be focusing on Macklemore’s future. Is he just a one hit wonder? Well hopefully not, he’s got some real potential. Macklemore and his co-produce Ryan Lewis have taken the music world with a thunder, influencing their listeners with their entertaining music and videos.
Macklemore has not only established himself as an independent singer but also made it very clear that his music deserves to be a hit. Charting top on billboard for ‘Thrift Shop’ and still climbing the ladders of success of his hit album ‘The Heist’, seems to me as if there is no stopping for this conscious rapper. A weird term isn’t it? The Conscious Rapper? People have started designating Macklemore as the conscious rapper who has been sober for the past couple of years, abstaining from liquor and substances. Like many other celebrities, Macklemore too had a substance abuse problem but has now managed to stay away from syrups, alcohol and recreational drugs. Macklemore claims that the substances had always hindered his work, preventing him from succeeding in creating good music. His abstinence has not only brought out the best of him but has also started questioning the use of mind altering substances in the music industry, especially challenging those who proudly publicize their affiliations with drugs.

Like many other artists, Macklemore reflects his life experiences in his lyrics, displaying a wide range of human emotions. He hasn’t strayed away from the conventional purpose of rap of course; which was to talk about the social issues. Macklemore addresses a lot of concerning issues which affects us all in different ways. Besides the catchy tune and the upbeat music in ‘Thrift Shop’, Macklemore mocks the snobby materialists who spend crazy fortune, that is, if you’d actually pay attention to the message he is trying to send out and not on the extremely masculine lady. Why waste $50 for a t-shirt when you can get cheap in thrift shop?
One of the accolades that Macklemore has achieved is of playing his un-signed music on radio stations in the US, which is extremely rare. He prides himself in staying independent, making that evident in his song ‘Cant Hold Us’. The fact that he is deliberately unsigned to any music label just makes him more wanted, I mean, who doesn’t love an underdog? While all the accomplished rappers have been signed, Macklemore has chosen to take a different path regardless of the difficulties he might face in producing music. Making good and meaningful music is something which is rarely seen these days, especially with the nonsensical garbage-like lyrics in some songs, Macklemore has chosen otherwise.
Speaking up for gay people, Macklemore indicates how much he despises the use of the derogative term, faggot in his song ‘Same Love’. Macklemore really is trying to create an impression here and people should know better that artists who rarely talk about ass and titties are worth listening to. I can only hope for Macklemore to remain independent and with Ryan Lewis as a co-producer, keep on creating wonderful songs and music videos.
