I was talking to a friend recently and we were discussing all the bands we used to listen to and how the tastes have changed. The name that struck me most was Trivium. They were apparently considered to be the “Next Metallica” by many music magazines, whatever that means. Nonetheless, they are a good bunch of lads who put together jaw dropping Metalcore music. Formed in 2000, Trivium has certainly has only gone one way and that is up. Thus, after our conversation I went back and downloaded their new album VENGEANCE FALLS. It was rather different from their previous work but heavy.

Now when I say it was different cause it wouldn’t strike you as a work of amazing music from the word go but the music grows on you. It was bound to happen with David Draiman of Disturbed producing it.
Have they gone a bit commercial? Yes, but don’t just close the media player just yet. It is not bad rather Trivium are approaching the league of extraordinary metal bands.

Brave the storm is a fast and aggressive track that is probably what sets the tone for the album. It is one of the few songs that you’d still relate to the previous albums like Shogun and Ascendancy with a decent guitar solo. Vengeance Falls is more of a melodic song which in no way means it is bad, it still has the Trivium identity into it. The screaming and growling goes down and vocal melody is heard more. Strife has my favourite intro from the album and the vocals only seem to get better in this. Matt Heafy kills it in this one. No way to heal is the first song I’d try and learn on the guitar if anyone wants to play. They have used the instruments well in this one with a lot of technical kinks added to relatively easy riffs. To Believe gets the tempo of the album back up a bit and is easy on the ears with a good little guitar solo put together by Trivium. At the end of this war, enter an acoustic solo. Usually all albums now have one with the acoustic intro. The song only gets heavy after that much to my delight considering Trivium are at their best when they are heavy. Through Blood and Dirt and Bone is a relatively groovy song put together nicely by the band. It is one for the people who like a little groove with their music. Villainy Thrives has the intro which I certainly like but the song carries a bit more melody than I would’ve preferred. Incineration : The Broken World has a riff that covers most of the song, but it was not a song that I particularly liked in the album. Don’t know why though. Wake ( The End is Nigh ) has a clean intro with soft vocals supporting it that go on for just a bit and then the heavy hits the song which in my opinion was well put with the intro. No Hope for the Human Race, the titles screams the truth, but getting back the music, the opening riff is amazing. It got me hooked instantly and the entire song has more of a thrash touch to it when it comes to the riffs. As I am Exploding is a typical aggressive heavy Trivium song with the drums making you dizzy and the lyrics can be heard from clean to screamed. The backing vocals on this one are particularly strong. Skulls…We are 138 is a Misfits cover. Well hear this one to hear Trivium playing punk and still remaining Trivium.
Overall it is a good album, I liked this one more than In Waves, but the only thing this has on the downside is the comparisons with Trivium’s older albums. The upside it that it is different and in no way similar to Shogun or Ascendancy. Commercialization is not necessarily bad and Trivium proves it right here. The vocals throughout are some of Matt’s best work and the guitar and drums are decent too. Backing vocals have improved overall. In all, I’d suggest a listen and let me know how did you find it.
Something to kick start it for you :
