Gunday! What we expected and what it showed us on the screen didn’t match up to our expectations. The casting of the movie was brilliant and each of them was outstanding in their performances. Though with an average rating of 2 stars out of 5, it didn’t make the audience go gaga about it, but then Gunday can be watched at least once. They did try to recreate some Jai-Veeru duo chemistry. The story is predictable enough on a lot of levels. With the whole post-partition backdrop, and Calcutta scenes, they did bring out the old era effect. The story is nothing extra-ordinary. It’s based on the ground of two childhood buddies who grow up together and turn out to be the biggest dons of the city and rule the black markets. And in a very clichéd manner, both fall for the same woman and are ready to stab each other to death for one girl. Well, that wasn’t too hard to guess, was it?
This Yash Raj production is a very typical entertaining bollywood flick with all the songs, love story, some good action sequences and not to forget the dialogues which made a mark in the minds. Irfan Khan pulled of his Satyajit Sarkar role formidably with his punch of the one liners every now and then. Then there were these hunks showing off their abs and muscles like never before, probably Ranveer and Arjun were always meant to play the role of Bikram and Bala. Priyanka Chopra was also catching up on the hotness level with her sizzling attires in each scene. Music was pretty catchy with my favorite being “Tune Mari Entryan”, though the “jiya” track was totally unnecessary in the movie because honestly we are now a no patience audience.
The movie gets terribly slow in between though with the whole, “she’s mine and not yours” drama and the revenge tales. There were no as such twists and turns or the “Oh my God! Did that just really happen?” moments. Director, Ali Abbas Zafar could have put a little more thought in this movie and made it so much better. If you love melodrama and romance and obviously if you are in love with Ranveer Singh, I would say go for it. Else you can wait till they air it on one of the channels soon. Basically you aren’t really missing out anything great if you haven’t already seen it yet and not making plans to watch it any sooner.
To sum up, you can feel the 80’s with Gunday and then again feel nothing great about this movie.
