Last Friday one of my friends was excitedly describing how totally awesome ‘How to Train your Dragon 2’ is when her older sister scoffed and said “Grow up! Kids watch animated movies”. The look on little sister’s face & mine were identical- narrowed eyes and a squinched up nose that ushered in a bout of vigorous head-shaking. No…no…NO! Everybody should watch animated movies. You know why? ‘Cuz they are AWESOME. They are funny and are full of intelligent quips and the visual effects…sheer brilliance!
Some of my all time favourites are- Brave (how super fantastic are their accents?!), Tangled(Flynn, you are the most realistic Disney character ever!!), How to train your dragon (Hiccup & Toothless…haha…I love!), Kung fu Panda (You just can’t get more adorable than a giant, round, funny panda), Shrek (it boggles my mind how someone that green and icky can be so likeable)…and well, my list will go on and on if I don’t rein it in :P.
But whenever I watch these characters I always picture some leading actors & actresses, who would portray a perfect live version of these animated characters, if given a chance. Here’s a list of actors who I think can prove to be quite analogous to certain Disney characters :-
Keira Knightley ~ Princess Merida, Brave

Keira Knightley ~ Princess Merida, Brave
Princess Merida is a flame-haired tomboy who also happens to be a Scottish princess. She is spunky, headstrong and a highly determined lass, who helps the audience realize just how important communication is. Who can be a better choice for this role than Keira Knightley? Her kickass portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett in ‘The Pirates of The Caribbean’ trilogy proves she can portray non-girly roles just as good as, if not better than the girly ones. But her beautiful portrayal of Guinevree in the movie ‘King Arthur’ shows with absolute certainty that she can play the part of the archery-loving, painfully obdurate and brave princess to perfection.
Jack Black ~ Po, Kung Fu Panda
Jack Black ~ Po, Kung Fu Panda
In my opinion, Jack Black, who lends his voice to the utterly lovable panda Po, is quite similar to him. (Well, if you overlook the ‘panda’ part of Po…tee-hee! :P). The film shows this paunchy panda devoid of any visible athletic potential, who trains to become a skilled martial-arts master. Po has this ‘couch potato’ adorableness that makes the audience like him instantly and so does Jack Black. You will find Jack lovable and funny, but the idea of him doing martial arts would seem quite unfathomable. But he just might pleasantly surprise you, quite like Po did!
Jonah Hill ~ Hiccup, How to Train your Dragon
Jonah Hill ~ Hiccup, How to Train your Dragon
Okay I know Hiccup’s most evident physical trait was that he was scrawny and Jonah Hill, well he can’t quite be described that...
But if you could maybe just let that bit go, Jonah with his endearing appeal, would be quite the perfect choice to portray Hiccup’s bashful, adolescent persona. Neither of the two would seamlessly fit into a ‘gung-ho’ clan, nor would they prove to be stoic, burly, dragon-slaying Vikings. But thanks to the movie ’21 Jump Street’, you can totally picture Jonah Hill as ‘that misfit who unwittingly proved to be a hero thanks to certain screwed up antics and a strong conscience.’ (Plus, think of how entertaining he’d look with a charming dragon like ‘toothless’!)
Robert Downey Jr. ~ Flynn Rider , Tangled

Robert Downey Jr. ~ Flynn Rider , Tangled
- Flynn Rider is a mix of ego and brashness. So is Robert Downey Jr. Their “smolder” can kill…sigh!
- Robert Downey has a certain roguish charm that makes him quite the ladies-man and the same can be said about Flynn.
- Flynn Rider couldn’t care less about the ‘legitimate’ way of doing things and Downey Jr. gives this vibe, that he too couldn’t give two figs about what’s the ‘permissible’ way of carrying something out.
- Both always come up with the most hilarious, sarcastic, and brilliant quips.
- And when you read this snippet (hopefully you have seen the movie and can actually picture Flynn as he says the following lines !)
[looking at a Wanted dead-or-alive poster of himself]
Oh no. No, no, no, no,no. This is bad. This is very, very bad. This is really bad. [pause] They just can't get my nose right!!
…you can actually picture Robert Downey Jr. saying that in that awesome way that he says most things…and there ain’t one thing wrong with that picture!
If you have any other choices for these characters or any other animated movie characters, do let us know!
Oh, and if you haven’t the faintest idea of who the above characters are
GO WATCH THE MOVIES!!
