Hollywood’s biggest night, as expected, applauded & lauded every breathtaking aspect of Hollywood.
Was it dazzling? Hell yeah!
Was it exciting? Of course.

Was it surprising? Hmm..that’s a tough one. On one hand the three biggies (The Best Picture, The Best performance by an actor in a leading role, Best performance by an actress in a leading role) went as expected, but the stentorian reaction to Gravity was unprecedented. The 86th Hollywood royalty gracing the Dolby Theater. There was hope, there was pride, there was admiration, there were tears. But most of all, there was a certain sense of enjoyment and comfort that seemed to bind all the A-listers together. The highlight for me was the show’s host, the ever-effervescent Ellen Degeneres. She kept the evening interactive and fun. And if you haven’t seen the ‘selfie’ she tweeted (which went viral & crashed twitter, mind you!), you my friend have been living under a rock.
Moving on to the awards…
12 Years A Slave took away the Oscar for ‘The Best Picture’. And what a deserving win that was! “Everyone deserves not just to survive but to live.” director Steve McQueen said while accepting his Academy Award. “This is the legacy of Solomon Northup.” He then grabbed his Oscar & jumped like a gleeful kid. And it suffices to say that his joy was infectious.

Matthew McConaughey was crowned the king & Cate Blanchett, the queen, as they took away the award for best performance by an actor, and by an actress in a leading role, respectively. Mr. McConaughey’s inspiring depiction of HIV +ve patient Ron Woodroof, deserved to take away the blue ribbon. The ever-so-handsome Daniel Day Lewis pronounced the five best actress nominees to be ‘five sublimely gifted women’ and we vehemently agree with him. But perhaps, Cate Blanchett did go an extra mile because she clearly deserved to win the prestigious accolade for her portrayal of the infelicitous Manhattan socialite, Jasmine.
With his leonine locks and his prominent red bow-tie, Jared Leto stepped up to accept the Oscar for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’. “I love you mom,” he said up on stage. “Thanks for helping me to dream.” The Oscar for ’Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ went to Lupita Nyong’o for her moving performance in 12 Years A Slave. Hyperventilating with emotion, she accepted her award graciously and left everyone a bit teary-eyed.

The ‘Best Director’ award went to Alfonso Cuarón, for Gravity. “For many of us making this film was a transformative experience. For a lot of people that transformation was wisdom. For me it was just the color of my hair”, jested the director, gesturing to his graying hair. One hour & 31 minutes of excellent craftsmanship and masterful visual effects is what resulted in Gravity’s phenomenal haul of a whopping seven Academy Awards.
